KeepFollowing

1 - Can't Stop Following

KeepFollowing v01.10.12.05

Description

After using the command: 'whisper /!kfollowme' on other players, we all had trouble getting their characters to stop following using '/kfollow tell stopall' and '/kfollow tell stop,<playername>'
Once, having the other player make their character jump (after two tries at '/kfollow tell stopall') stopped the following completely.
Other times, '/kfollow tell stopall' either did nothing, or every time the character moved after using the command , each step they took, there would be a popup of '<Chr> is no longer following.' It took one to three tries using the '/kfollow tell stop,<playername>' or their turning KeepFollowing off with '/kfollow stop' to get this cleared up.

None of us found it 'easy' after trying it out. There are too many commands which are similar but do completely different things (stop following versus stopping the addon from working is the big one).
The commands are too long to type in critical situations, especially when you have to add a specific name into them to get them to actually work, rather than targeting or issuing a general command.

There are too many commands, period, to make macros: nobody needs one addon taking up all their macro slots, or having to do all that macro-making work themselves (see GiveMeX for an excellent addon that does the multiple addon work for you).

It would be much better to have one command, such as '/kfw' start a character following yours, work on the targeted/whispered character AND work on all party members when used generally, AND stop the following when used by either the person who turned it on or the player doing the following (and no one else). Or just '/kfw all' to turn on & off partywide following. Or '/kfw' to start someone/all following you, and '/kfws' to stop by both leader or follower.
It would be very good if there were an easy, one-key way to make your character stop following someone else, such as <Esc> or <Space>, for example.

If it were easier to stop the following, you wouldn't need to have a 'regular follow' command. I can 'regular follow' someone else on my own, and if they're AFK, I want their character to KeepFollowing, not get lost the first time I turn a corner.

An 'On/Off' command to turn the addon on & off, instead of confusion between 'stop the addon' command & 'stop following' command would be easier to remember.

***** It would be MUCH better for security and confusion issues if it only worked on members of your party. Then I wouldn't feel the need to have a macro always at the ready to turn the addon off in case of accident or malicious misuse. *****

I think it might be sufficient to only have the addon allow you to make others follow your character, since there is already '/follow'. If you want to KeepFollowing another player, you can & should ask them first, so they know to come back if they lose you. Or you can regular /follow them yourself, and they can KeepFollow you if they lose your character & they didn't intend to.
However, it would make me feel much more secure if I alone can tell my characters to Keep Following someone else. I'd still use it the other way, if it was Party Only.

If you're going to have separate commands for 'tell other players to follow me' and 'tell my character to keep following X' (maybe /kfw & /kfme), you might want to automatically tell player X that they are leading another player, so they don't accidentally dump them somewhere & not come back for them. (I think it would be polite to ask first, but things happen.)

I'll work on this after work tomorrow, and I'll upload what I've got.

After some research, I've narrowed down on a couple main issues.

As of 4.1 Keepfollowing has been broken.

Any "tell" commands would not work as is because of a change blizzard made. Easy to fix now that i've seen it.

I'm working on adding the commands you want:

/kfw - if someone is selected, it will tell that one to follow, else all follow
/kfw all - will tell all party members to follow
    /kfw <playername> - will tell <playername> to follow
/kfw stop - will stop trying to keepfollowing (instead of /kfws)

First off, Arboghast, I would like to apologize for not responding to this sooner.

For some reason I had email alerts turned off for alerting me when I get a ticket. I know 7 months later doesn't help, but I'll definitely take a look at what you are saying, and see if I can implement something.

Whether you still use the addon or not, I'll do it for future users.
